As artificial intelligence continues to advance, tech companies and media often describe AI in ways that blur the line between machine and human. Phrases like 'AI thinks,' 'AI feels,' or 'AI understands' are frequently used, but they mislead the public about what AI truly is. AI models, no matter how sophisticated, do not possess consciousness, emotions, or self-awareness. They process vast amounts of data and generate responses based on patterns, not feelings or intent. By anthropomorphizing AI—assigning it human-like qualities—we risk misunderstanding its actual capabilities and, more importantly, its limitations. This misconception can lead to misplaced trust or fear. For instance, believing that AI can 'decide' or 'care' about outcomes may cause us to overlook the real risks: bias in training data, lack of transparency in decision-making, and the potential for misuse by humans. Instead of focusing on the illusion of AI as a sentient being, we should critically examine how these systems work, where they can fail, and how they should be regulated. The conversation about AI should shift from science fiction to science fact. AI is a powerful tool, but it is not a person. Recognizing this distinction is essential for responsible development, deployment, and governance of AI technologies.
